Vaccinations

Recommended and required vaccinations for travel to Tanzania

Yellow Fever

Required

Certificate required for entry. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel.

Typhoid

Recommended

Spread through contaminated food and water. Vaccination recommended.

Hepatitis A

Recommended

Spread through contaminated food. Two-dose vaccine provides long-term protection.

Hepatitis B

Recommended

Spread through blood/body fluids. Recommended for longer stays.

Tetanus/Diphtheria

Recommended

Ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date.

Polio

Recommended

Booster may be required if traveling from certain countries.

Rabies

Malaria Prevention

Malaria is present in Tanzania. Taking proper precautions is essential.

Anti-Malarial Medication

Malaria is present throughout Tanzania. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis options: Malarone, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine are commonly prescribed.

Mosquito Bite Prevention

Use DEET-based repellent (30-50%), wear long sleeves/pants at dusk and dawn, and sleep under mosquito nets.

Symptoms to Watch

Fever, chills, headache, muscle aches within weeks of return. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

Important Reminder

Continue taking anti-malarial medication for the recommended period after returning home (usually 1-4 weeks depending on the medication). Symptoms can appear up to a year after travel.

Safety Guidelines

Follow these guidelines for a safe and enjoyable safari experience

Wildlife Safety

  • Never exit the vehicle during game drives unless permitted
  • Keep arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times
  • Don't make loud noises or sudden movements near animals
  • Follow your guide's instructions exactly
  • Never come between a mother and her young
  • Maintain safe distance from all wildlife

Camp Safety

  • Stay inside your tent/room after dark
  • Use a flashlight when moving around at night
  • Listen for night guards' instructions
  • Don't leave food in your tent
  • Be cautious near water sources (crocodiles, hippos)
  • Store valuables in the provided safe

General Safety

  • Stay hydrated - drink bottled water only
  • Protect yourself from the sun
  • Use insect repellent consistently
  • Don't walk alone in unfamiliar areas
  • Keep copies of important documents
  • Register with your embassy if concerned

While our camps have medical supplies, we recommend bringing these personal items:

Pain relievers (ibuprofen, paracetamol)
Antihistamines
Antidiarrheal medication
Rehydration salts
Antiseptic cream/wipes
Bandages and plasters
Tweezers (for thorns/splinters)
Sunburn relief gel
Eye drops
Personal prescription medications
First aid supplies

  • Fruits you can peel yourself
  • Food at reputable lodges/camps
  • Halal-certified meals (all our tours)

Avoid

  • Tap water and ice cubes
  • Raw or undercooked meat
  • Unpeeled fruits/vegetables
  • Street food (unless confident in source)
  • Unpasteurized dairy products
  • Food left at room temperature
